The portrait of Sharbat Gula, known as “the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa,” was taken by Steve McCurry in 1984. Gula was a child living in a Pakistani refugee camp during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The photograph has since become iconic, being recognized around the world.
