In the center of the U.S. Capitol stands the Rotunda, a domed room whose ceiling was painted by Constantino Brumidi in 1865. Brumidi was inspired by the concepts of Liberty and Victory and chose to adorn the ceiling with a fresco titled The Apotheosis of Washington, which hangs 180 feet from the floor.
