The Peel Triden (1965)
The Peel Trident, manufactured by England’s Peel Engineering Company in the mid-1960s, presents a futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of The Jetsons, yet it served as a practical microcar. Positioned as the company’s second three-wheeled microcar, the Trident was marketed as a convenient “shopping car” or a “Saloon Scooter.” Despite its innovative design and intended practicality, however, the microcar failed to achieve substantial market success. Instead, it garnered the nickname “The Terrestrial Flying Saucer,” reflecting its unconventional appearance and limited commercial impact. Despite its initial lukewarm reception, the Peel Trident has experienced a resurgence of interest in recent years, notably due to its featured appearances on the popular reality series Top Gear.
