AMC Pacer (1975–80)

The AMC Pacer, produced from 1975 to 1980, aimed to pioneer the cab-forward design concept, positioning the front of the car closer to the vehicle’s front end akin to contemporary train layouts. However, despite its innovative approach, the Pacer fell short of expectations on multiple fronts. Owners reported inadequate air conditioning, coupled with an overpowering chemical odor characteristic of new car materials. Furthermore, its unconventional appearance earned it a reputation as a “nerdy” vehicle, contributing to its status as one of the automotive industry’s most notorious models. In 2007, Hagerty Insurance Agency bestowed upon the AMC Pacer the unenviable title of “Worst Car Design of All Time,” a sentiment echoed by Edmunds.com, which ranked it 20th on their list of the Worst Cars of All Time. Thus, while the Pacer may have attempted to break new ground in automotive design, its shortcomings and lack of appeal ultimately relegated it to infamy within the annals of automotive history.
